The Pantanal is in some ways comparable to the African savanna, with vast prairies divided by meandering rivers and dense forests at the waters edge. While the Pantanal has a lower diversity of wildlife than the Amazon, it does have large concentrations of many different tropical and sub-tropical creatures that are relatively easily observed. Along the rivers there are clouds of birds that chatter and cavort in rookeries of thousands of nests. Herds of capybara, a giant guinea pig-like rodent, can often be seen at the rivers edge along with caiman, South Americas crocodiles.
The protected reserve around Iguassu Falls is a very important refuge as it maintains a collection of plant and animals species from both the northern and southern parts of the continent. At Iguassu we will actually stay within the Parque Nacional do Iguaçu itself, very close to the falls. Over our three day trip we visit not only the popular sites of the falls, but we also venture off the beaten track into the forest to see creatures that thrive in this spectacular reserve.
