The
Galapagos are one of the world's most important places to observe
wildlife. They lie 600 miles off the western coast of Ecuador
and are the tips of great submerged volcanoes. The islands are
so isolated that they have been colonized by only those few animals
that were blown offshore by the wind or floated on logs across
this vast expanse of ocean. |

| Over the millennia these creatures have evolved mostly without predators or human presence. The result is a collection of beautiful and in many cases quite bizarre kinds of animals. Most Galapagos animals have no fear of humans and we can get very close to observe, photograph, and marvel at these fascinating creatures. Virtually every kind of plant and animal in the Galapagos is unique. Most of the islands have creatures that can be found nowhere else in the world. The islands formations are themselves strikingly beautiful. The terrain of the islands varies from stark volcanic rocks to lush equatorial forest. In the first years of the 21st Century, anyone interested in natural history should visit the Galapagos Islands. | ||||||||||||
