Highlights: Featuring light charter flights into remote Tortuguero National Park with boat trips through the rain forest, a walk on a canopy walkway with views of the active Arenal volcano, Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and Butterfly Garden and Café Britt's coffee tour.

Red Eye Tree FrogThe Connoisseur is a ten day trip that visits many of the most spectacular natural areas of Costa Rica. It offers participants a comprehensive view of the country and the very different and astoundingly beautiful natural environments. Costa Rica has tall mountains, bubbling volcanos, broad beaches on both the Caribbean and the Pacific Ocean, mangrove forests, misty cloud forests, and lowland rainforests teeming with life. On the Explorer we visit all of these environments and observe the flora and fauna along with our expert guides.

We will travel by many different methods including van, boat, chartered light plane, and on foot. Some days we will spend exploring the forested lazy rivers than wind their way through the forest. On another day we will find ourselves padding listening to Howler Monkeys and the calls of Scarlet Macaw parrots. We will gaze into the bubbling cauldron of an enormous volcano and thrill at the vistas of moving clouds.

The trip begins in the capital, San José, and in our travels we will discover countless small treasures like local markets, a butterfly farm, and lovely vista after vista of mountains and the sea. We will visit several different regions of the country giving us the opportunity to observe many of the fascinating environments of this lovely country. We visit several National Parks including Monteverde Cloud Forest and Arenal Volcano. We will also spend some days at the beautiful Tortuga Reserve on the Caribbean Coast.

Though we get a comprehensive view of the natural environments of Costa Rica, there is plenty of time at each stop to observe the flora and fauna. We will have a guide with us throughout the trip and when we are in the natural areas, enthusiastic naturalist guides that help us identify the great profusion of wildlife around us.

Extend your stay to Costa Rica: Consider a side trip to the Osa Peninsula and Corcovado National Park! The Costa Rica Connoisseur combines well with another of our trips in Costa Rica, the Pacific Rainforest Lodge. A visit there can be added before or after the program. It very well complements the Explorer since the lodge offers the opportunity to explore a lovely rainforest not visited in the standard itinerary: Corcovado National Park. This lodge lies in the most pristine region of all of Costa Rica. The cabins are perched high on a hill overlooking the turquoise blue waves of the Pacific Ocean. The Pacific Rainforest Lodge offers not only the chance to explore the largest rainforest in Costa Rica, but also the fascinating marine environment of the Pacific Ocean.
